Mexico earthquake: Tsunami warnings triggered, 5 killed

At least 60 people have been confirmed dead after a massive natural disaster struck southern Mexico on Thursday night, the governor of Oaxaca said Friday. Besides Mexico, EL Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama were on alert for the tidal waves.

A magnitude-8.4 quake off Mexico's southern coast is the strongest to hit the country in 100 years, President Enrique Peña Nieto has said, writes The Independent.

"It was a major quake in scale and magnitude, the strongest in the past 100 years", said President Enrique Pena Nieto in an address from the National Center for Disaster Prevention headquarters, where he was supervising the emergency response.

President Enrique Peña Nieto offered his condolences to the families affected and said that 50 million people across the country had felt the tremor.

The head of the National Civil Protection, Luis Felipe Puente, confirmed to local radio 23 people died in Oaxaca state, eight in Chiapas and two in Tabasco.

"The quake magnitude was 8.2, the strongest in a century in the country". The quake is being considered stronger than the 1985 quake that had caused significant damage to Mexico City and resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. Shaking was reported as far away as the capital Mexico City.

The USGS has reported multiple aftershocks, including four with tremors measuring above 5.0 in magnitude. I rushed out to the street in panic to find over one hundred people out there, many of whom were wearing pajamas. The town of Juchitán, in Oaxaca, was the wort-hit towns, there were reportedly 17 deaths.

Waves as high as 9.8 feet above tide level were possible along some of Mexico's coast.

Chiapas Gov. Manuel Velasco said the 8.1 magnitude quake was the strongest on record in state history, topping a magnitude 7.9 quake in 1902. The U.S. Geological Survey measured it at 8.1 magnitude.

"We have reports of some damage and the death of one person, even though we still don't have details", Morales said.

While on the other hand, hurricane Katrina has strengthened as it heads to the east coast of the country and is now 185 miles east of Mexico.
