Gerri Yoder, Henry County's animal control director, told the Journal-Constitution that she has "no idea where [the tiger] belonged".

Feld Entertainment, which had been contracted to move the tiger, said it does not know how Suzy got out while she was being transported from Tampa, Florida, to Memphis, Tennessee.

The incident happened when the truck driver stopped for an overnight break in Georgia and the tiger escaped from the vehicle, unnoticed. "(The company) discovered that she was missing when the truck arrived at the destination".

Suzy was part of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus act and last performed in May during their final run on New York's Long Island.

He said police then shot and killed the tiger and the dog survived. "I believe they will be joining another circus", Payne said. "This is a sad day".

Authorities said the tiger's owner has been in contact with them.

Police officers had been waiting for tranquilizer to arrive from the Noah's Ark animal sanctuary in Locust Grove, but it didn't get there in time.

He also said that he spoke to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and has been assured that the guilty will not be spared. The press freedom group says 25 journalists have died in India since 2010.

It's not clear where the tiger came from, Smith said. When she looked out her back window to check on her dog, she spotted a tiger in her neighbor's yard, on the side closest to her yard.

According to Smith, cops had no choice but to kill the tiger after it attacked the dog. Because of that, the animal could have been "a victim of the exotic pet trade" and "born and bred for the goal of resale".

There were no apparent injuries to the animal, and the tiger did have claws and a full set of adult teeth.

The nearby Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary released a statement saying all their tigers were accounted for at the shelter.

'Our two Sumatran tigers are definitely accounted for, ' zoo spokeswoman Rachel Davis said.

- Animal must be housed in a facility that is detached from their home.

Authorities are investigating the origins of a tiger seen running around a Georgia neighborhood before attacking a dog, leading to its shooting death by police.
