"Her killing is an ominous portent for dissent in democracy and a brutal assault on freedom of press", the Editors Guild of India said in a statement.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today condemned the killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru and described it as "sad and very alarming".

Several social organisations, writers and journalists unions have strongly condemned the assassination of the 55-year-old journalist at her residence in Bengaluru on Tuesday night by unidentified assailants, who fired at her at point-blank range. "The Congress government must investigate the matter and book the culprits soon", he said.

The press freedom group says 25 journalists have died in India since 2010.

Theresa May's "secret" £50bn Brexit bill "nonsense" says David Davis
She described it as 'the single most important step we can take to prevent a cliff-edge for people and businesses'. Brexit secretary David Davis called the report "nonsene" speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr Show on Sunday morning.

He also said that he spoke to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and has been assured that the guilty will not be spared.

The saffron party also asked the Karnataka government to arrest the murderers swiftly and wondered if the SIT constituted by it will meet the same fate as the one probing the August 2016 murder of rationalist MM Kalburgi, whose killers remain untraced. Her death has been met by mass protests and vigils in at least eight cities in her home state, as well as a dozen other cities, including Panaji. Now, Lankesh has also met her end in nearly exactly the same circumstances. "The point is the entire ideology is to silence voices", he told reporters. Club Secretary Dharmendra Jore said the Club had requested the Karnataka government to order a CBI investigation into the killing and demanded efforts to ensure that the "masterminds and the foot-soldiers" behind the murder received the maximum punishment.

Union Minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari hit back, terming as "irresponsible, baseless and false" the Congress allegation seeking to link the killing of Gauri to the BJP or people following its ideology.
