The so-called Eagle Creek Fire, which has burned 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares) since it broke out on Saturday, has torn through timber in the gorge, destroying landmarks in one of the Pacific Northwest's most prized natural areas, officials said.

More than 26,000 personnel were fighting the wildfires, and National Guard and other military personnel were being activated to help in the effort, Montana FireWatch reported. He still didn't know when residents could return home. A fire started by kids playing with fireworks is destroying forests and famous OR locations along the Columbia River.

According to OSP, the teen was contacted by law enforcement at the trailhead and interviewed.

"It's pretty surreal to see that area on fire", he said.

Conditions slowing the blaze could change again "in a moment's notice, and the winds can accelerate very quickly", Los Angeles Fire Capt. Ralph Terrazas warned, however. Trucks heading westbound are being detoured off the highway at The Dalles.

All lanes of Interstate 84 remain closed from Troutdale to 2 miles west of Hood River. He said they will work with law enforcement to determine when to reopen the road.

The blaze was one of 81 large fires burning in the United States on Tuesday, with more than 28 burning in Montana and almost 20 in OR, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar
Both outpourings were sparked by attacks by Rohingya militants on police posts which triggered a crackdown by the Burmese military.

Ash from the fire rained down throughout the metro Portland Monday night, KATU reports, and people from Camas, Vancouver, Washougal and Beaverton also reported ash falling in their area. The air has been smoky on and off for weeks, prompting the National Weather Service to issue numerous air quality alerts.

The Park Service says all the trails on the east side of the park are closed.

In Washington state, the Diamond Creek fire, near the Canadian border in the Okanogan/Wenatchee National Forest, grew to 75,000 acres Monday, DeMario said.

Oregon State Police say the fire appears to be human-caused, likely by the misuse of fireworks.

The Eagle Creek Fire started Saturday, Sept. 2, and has seared through the Gorge threatening homes and the historic Multnomah Falls Lodge. They can contact police at (503) 375-3555.

More than 150 hikers were forced to spend the night in the mountains east of Portland made it down the trail to safety on Sunday.
