Korea warns Japan of 'imminent self-destruction'

'All options' on table after NKorea missile launch over Japan: Trump

'All options' on table after NKorea missile launch over Japan: Trump

The United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned North Korea's firing of a ballistic missile over Japan on Tuesday as an "outrageous" threat and demanded that Pyongyang not launch any more missiles and abandons all nuclear weapons and programmes.

"We see a North Korea whose objective is to have missiles capable of transporting a nuclear weapon tomorrow", Le Drian told RTL radio. The North followed its two tests of Hwasong-14 ICBMs by threatening in August to launch a salvo of its Hwasong-12 intermediate range missiles toward the U.S. Pacific island territory of Guam.

President Moon Jae-in convened a National Security Council (NSC) session Sunday, shortly after South Korea's weather agency detected a magnitude 5.7 quake from North Korea's nuclear test site in a sign of another strategic provocation.

North Korea has been test-firing missiles at a rapid clip this year.

Pyongyang has tested a barrage of missiles over the past years, but it is the first time it launches what is believed to be a ballistic missile over Japan.

This missile launch was not a test - it was a demonstration.

Its fifth nuclear test in September 2016 was measured to be possibly North Korea's biggest detonation ever, but the natural disaster it caused was still not believed to be big enough to demonstrate a thermonuclear test.

North Korea has conducted numerous ballistic missile tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions, but firing a projectile over mainland Japan was a rare and provocative move.

Sec. James Mattis: Reports Suggesting He Disagrees with Trump Are 'Ludicrous'
On Tuesday, North Korea provoked worldwide alarm after it fired a mid-range missile over the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Constant North Korean provocations do not seriously disturb Seoul-based foreigners like Matthew Crawford either.

For second time in two days, Trump spoke by phone Wednesday with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about their "close cooperation" on efforts to address the launch, the White House said.

Abe also told newsmen that Trump said the USA was 100 percent with Japan.

The move has come in response to the recent missile tests by the North Korean regime headed by Kim Jong-un, Efe news reported on Thursday.

Speaking Thursday, General Vincent K. Brooks, commander of US Forces Korea, said this was taken into consideration. "It is an important and serious issue that directly affects people's safety in the South and North".

The later part of his tweet seemed to contradict both Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who said, "We're never out of diplomatic solutions", and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who has supported talks with Pyongyang while simultaneously gutting his own department's capability to conduct them.

Juche is North Korea's homegrown ideology of self-reliance that is a mix of Marxism and extreme nationalism preached by state founder Kim Il Sung, the current leader's grandfather.

The United States often sends its warplanes to South Korea, mostly for patrols, when animosity rises on the Korean Peninsula, which is technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
