We have many military options and the president wanted to be briefed on each one of them.

North Korea just tested their most powerful nuclear bomb yet and caused an natural disaster 10 times more powerful than their last test. South Korea's weather agency said the artificial quake caused by the explosion was five times to six times stronger than tremors generated by the North's previous five tests.

"We made clear that we have the ability to defend ourselves and our allies, South Korea and Japan, from any attack".

In a statement on Sunday outside the White House, Secretary of Defense James "Mad Dog" Mattis stated, "Any threat to the United States or its territories including Guam or our allies will be met with a massive military response".

Both China and Russian Federation have confirmed they agree "to adhere to the goal of the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", and the United Nations Security Council will meet on Monday to discuss Mr Kim's latest provocation.

North Korea flew a Hwasong-12 over northern Japan last week, the first such overflight by a missile capable of carrying nukes, in a launch that Kim described as a "meaningful prelude" to containing Guam, the home of major USA military facilities, and more ballistic missile tests targeting the Pacific.

"All members unanimously agreed on the threat North Korea poses, and they remain unanimous in their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", he said.

Speaking outside the White House, he added: "We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea".

North Korean nationals could also be prevented from working overseas, and its top officials could be subjected to an asset freeze.

WWII bomb causes two cities to be evacuated
Three police explosives experts in Goettingen were killed in 2010 while preparing to defuse a 1,000 lb (450kg) bomb . The bombs were found last week at a building site, in what is the country's biggest evacuation since the war.

Then North Korean state media confirmed this was no natural disaster.

The UN Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting - its second urgent session in less than a week.

The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea.

The test was a "perfect success" and the final step in attaining a "state nuclear force", North Korean news anchor Ri Chun Hee said in a televised announcement Sunday.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said there was no doubt this was North Korea's sixth nuclear test, calling it "unforgivable".

South Korea's meteorological agency said Sunday's explosion was as much as six times the size of the fifth nuclear test, in September previous year, and 11 times the size of the January 2016 detonation.

Members of Congress expressed alarm at the North's test and emphasised strengthening USA missile defences. Leaders in Russia, China and Europe issued condemnations. Earlier, the party's newspaper published photos of Kim examining what it said was a nuclear warhead being fitted onto an intercontinental ballistic missile.

President Moon Jae In said his country would not allow its neighbour to continue to advance its nuclear and missile technologies. China is a large trading partner of North Korea, but it is also the largest US trading partner in terms of goods imported and exported. Essentially, this was a more tempered version of Donald Trump's fire and fury comments from last month.
