Thousands Evacuated From Their Homes Ahead Of Controlled Explosion

Police will ring every doorbell and use helicopters with heat-sensing cameras to make sure nobody is in the area before they diffuse the bomb, and anyone who refuses to leave would be forcibly removed. It was at that stage the largest-ever evacuation of a German city but has now been eclipsed by the latest Frankfurt bomb.

About 60,000 people were ordered to leave in what was Germany's biggest evacuation since the war, with more than 1,000 emergency service workers helping to clear the area.

About 65,000 Frankfurt residents have left their homes for the day to allow experts to defuse a massive unexploded bomb from World War Two.

The bomb, which was dropped by the British during Allied bombing campaigns, is an aerial mine HC 4000, weighing 1.4 tonnes, reports Efe news.

But experts warn that the devices that remain could be getting more unstable as the munitions age and their fuses grow more brittle, and as bombs are discovered in more built-up, harder-to-reach areas. If that fails, a water jet was to be used to cut the fuses.

But it's hard, knowing some of her friends and family are still in flooded homes, and that her middle school is flooded. Authorities and family members are reporting more than a dozen storm-related deaths in Texas due to Hurricane Harvey.

British and United States warplanes pummeled the country with 1.5 million tonnes of bombs that killed 600,000 people.

It was earlier reported that 70,000 residents would need to be evacuated, but recent figures are a little lower, but still form the largest evacuation yet since the end of World War II.

Roads and transport systems will also be closed, and air traffic in the evacuation zone may be affected.

Museums were offering residents free entry today, and many hotels offered discounts.
