Hurricane Irma fell to Category 2 Saturday morning, but will likely regain some strength in the next two days as its intensity continues to fluctuate, forecasters said.

Fox News Senior Meterologist Janice Dean said Thursday it's still too early to tell whether Irma will pass well north of the Lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico, or have direct impacts there by next Wednesday or Thursday.

Hurricane Irma has become a monster storm that is projected to reach Category 4 strength, with winds up to 140 miles per hour, by next week.

Channel 9 meteorologists will continue to track Irma's path and its impact on the Charlotte area.

As of Sunday morning, Hurricane Irma remains a strong Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour and it is tracking to the west southwest at 15 miles per hour.

Hurricane Irma has weakened slightly, but still remains a powerful storm, a day after rapid intensification quickly turned it from tropical storm to Category 3 hurricane. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 5 days... and Irma is forecast to regain category 3 strength and potentially reach category 4 strength next week.

While Irma is still more than 3,000 miles from the U.S. mainland, it has already struck fear in many Americans.

Hurricane Irma has the potential to become one of the strongest hurricanes of the 2017 season. The storm will take about a week to make its trek westward across the Atlantic Ocean.

Earlier this month, forecasters said the Atlantic hurricane season would be "above-normal", with 14 to 19 named storms ahead of the peak season. However, tropical-storm-force winds and very rough surf could start to show up over these islands during Tuesday.

At this point, folks on the Carolina coast should be aware of Irma's whereabouts and begin making a preliminary plan in case a bigger threat to land is forecast in the coming days.

Since Irma is still so far out in the tropical Atlantic, no watches and warnings have been issued in association with this storm.
