Lynn is due to become a free agent in November and the Cardinals freed up some spending money Wednesday by trading Mike Leake to the Mariners, but it doesn't sound like there are any extension talks in the works.

Once again, the Mariners have made a significant trade after last month's non-waiver trade deadline.

The Seattle Mariners traded infield prospect Rayder Ascanio to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Mike Leake, cash, and worldwide slot money on August 30. With Felix Hernandez (shoulder) and James Paxton (pectoral) on the disabled list for Seattle, Leake should slide right into the rotation upon his arrival, perhaps making his team debut as early as the Mariners' weekend series with the Athletics.

In 26 starts with the Cardinals this season, Leake is 7-12 with a 4.21 ERA.

Ultimately, Dipoto finally got the pitching the Mariners needed, and while it may be too late to snag a playoff spot in 2017, they certainly cheaply bolstered their rotation depth for next season. After starting the season 5-3 with a 2.24 ERA in his first 10 starts, Leake's numbers have slowly trended in a negative direction. He has a mutual option for the 2022 season that includes a $5 million buyout if the team doesn't pick it up.

Leake has been one of the most durable starters in the National League but has not been at his best since the All-Star break. He signed a five-year, $80 million deal before the 2016 season. In a combined 111 games this season, he hit.217 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs. The Mariners also acquired $750,000 in global signing bonus allotment as part of the deal.
