As the federal government considers how best to help Texas recover from Hurricane Harvey, Rep. Pete King, whose home state of NY was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, reminded his Lone Star State colleagues that some of them voted against a $51 billion aid package that year.

Nearly three feet of rain has fallen on the Houston area, and more is yet to come.

Schumer (D-N.Y.) defended the $60 million Sandy relief bill passed in 2012, but said he would not hold it against Texas lawmakers who voted against it in passing storm aid for Harvey.

"The congressional members from Texas are hypocrites, and I said back in 2012 they'd be proven to be hypocrites".

"We are the United States of America, and in times of trouble, emergencies and hardship, we must remain unified", Norcross said in a statement. They must approve several spending bills by September 30 to keep the government operating, and also raise the debt ceiling to prevent the country from defaulting on debt payments. "I covered many of these people, many of them, just like in Houston, lost absolutely everything they owned". "Disaster relief needs to be focused on the victims of disaster relief, and I supported that for Sandy for disaster relief there, and I support that anywhere where there was a major disaster without getting distracted by political unnecessary pork spending". All but one Texan representative in Congress voted for the bill in 2013, and that was Rep. John Culberson.

"He [Cornyn] voted for Sandy relief, just not the package that became law", Brandywine said. The maneuver angered fiscal conservatives.

But none of these largely bogus objections explain why the GOP-controlled House treated the Hurricane Sandy appropriations with all the enthusiasm normally reserved for a foreign-aid bill.

Mauricio Pochettino: Lack of concentration, not venue, cost Spurs two points
After the upsetting 2-3 defeat at home to Burnley in the season opener, the Blues pulled off a 2-1 victory over Tottenham last weekend.

Directing emergency funds to areas hit by natural disasters had traditionally been quick bipartisan exercises, but that changed after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

But the vast majority of the bill did have to do with Sandy recovery, The Washington Post found.

Christie, in a told-you-so moment on Monday, chastised Texas lawmakers for their actions after Sandy, one of the worst storms in recorded history. "There are still people in very real jeopardy". Then, all of a sudden, you're not going to want a conversation of all the philosophical niceties because people are suffering and dying and you want to make sure you minimize that as much as you can.

In addition, Gov. Chris Christie says an emergency task force of police, fire and emergency personnel is being sent from New Jersey to Texas to help with Tropical Storm Harvey rescue efforts.

A wide array of federal agencies, and more than 8,500 federal officials are working in the two states. He added that "appreciation" at the end of the day "is what matters most".

"I would say to the lawmakers of Texas, now you know what it's like, and now you should know, as we learned in Sandy, this kind of flood instance and the time of help FEMA gives is essential", Schumer said.

Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall on the Gulf of Mexico coast on 25 August, has dumped up to 40 in (102 cm) of rain in some areas and flooded several parts of the Houston metropolitan area.
