Joel Osteen opened his Houston megachurch to those seeking shelter after social media critics slammed the televangelist for not offering to house people in need while Harvey swamps the city. "Please join us as we pray for the safety of our Texas friends & family".

On Tuesday, the church announced it would begin receiving people who need shelter. The church seats 16,800, and could potentially shelter thousands of displaced people. "There may be more but I happen to know of about three of them that literally had to be pulled out of high water", Lakewood spokesperson Don Iloff, Osteen's brother-in-law, told The Christian Post on Monday". "We will continue to be a distribution center for those in need", church spokesman and Osteen's father-in-law Donald Iloff said in a statement to CNN. We want to help make sure you are safe.

Lakewood Church's Twitter account said that supplies were being sent to the location, and they were in search of volunteers to help in their efforts.

The site has reached out to Lakewood Church for clarification, but has yet to hear back.

Although streets around Lakewood Church were reported as not flooded, streets within a mile of the church were closed due to high water.

Osteen has written seven books and his net worth is said to be more than $40 million. Another wrote, "I was so disappointed to hear you wouldn't let people take shelter in the huge church!"

The church was founded by Osteen's father in the 1950s. "Lakewood's doors are open and we are receiving anyone who needs shelter". The church also is partnering with disaster relief organization Samaritan Purse to provide assistance to the Houston area.

The Houston Lakewood Church has a capacity of nearly 17,000 but it has not been open to evacuees since the storm hit.

Lakewood posted a message to social media on Sunday, providing shelter information and saying the church had been flooded. Needless to say, people had a lot of thoughts about it on Twitter.

He later added, "Our hearts break as we see the damage and destruction in our city".
