Sanctions against Russian Federation will be lifted when there is no reason for them, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has said she sees no possibility for deepening European Union co-operation with Ankara at present as the rule of law no longer exists in Turkey.

It was "a good style to talk about the modalities of how things can be done", Merkel said on Tuesday at her summer press conference in Berlin.

Asked what she could do to spice up what has so far been a somnolent election campaign, seemingly bereft of real debate, Merkel insisted she wasn't bored.

However, the betting market remains confident that Chancellor Merkel's party the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and her sister party, Christian Social Union (CSU) will be the biggest in next month's election.

"We say clearly: no coalition with the AfD and no coalition with the Left", Merkel said, underscoring her party's standard line on potential future governing alliances. This centre would be in Egypt, a transit country for migrants striving to reach Europe.

She did not speak out on migrants or Turkey, but she said, also on Sunday in an interview with Die Welt, a German newspaper, that she did not regret opening Germany's doors to refugees at the height of the migration crisis.

In an interview published on Sunday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood by her resolution two years ago to provide refuge to those fleeing from warfare in Syria and other countries.

"Europe itself still hasn't done its homework to this day", she said.

Turning to foreign policy, Merkel called on Turkey to release German citizens swept up in the aftermath of last year's failed coup attempt, calling their imprisonment "unjustified".

Merkel says "this is a very complicated phase of our relationship" with Turkey.

Mentioning German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yucel and several others by name, Merkel told reporters Tuesday, "our demand is very clear: those people who are in prison should be freed".

Yücel, a German-Turkish dual national, was arrested on February 27 on charges of "making propaganda in support of a terrorist organization" and "inciting the public to violence", after first being detained on February 14.

Responding to pressure from her opponent, Ms Merkel said she could envisage legislation to enable vehicle owners to file collective lawsuits against carmakers over excessively polluting diesel engines.
