U.S. revises assessment on North Korean missile launches

In May, North Korea thumbed its nose at Mr Tillerson personally by testing a missile just after the US Secretary of State chaired a UN Security Council meeting at which he warned that failure to curb Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs could lead to "catastrophic consequences".

"The military is keeping a tight surveillance over the North to cope with further provocations", the ministry said.

The U.S. Pacific Command revised its initial assessment that the first and third short-range missiles failed during flight to say they flew about 250 kilometers (155 miles).

North Korea's last missile test on July 28 was for an intercontinental ballistic missile created to fly 10,000 km (6,200 miles). "The second missile launch at 12:07 p.m. appears to have blown up nearly immediately".

North Korea has fired "several projectiles" into sea off its eastern coast, the South Korean military says. Early reports suggested that the missiles traveled only 150 miles before falling in the sea.

Xi's remarks came in a message on Thursday to Moon marking the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Beijing and Seoul, close economic and trade partners who have maintained generally friendly relations despite South Korea's military alliance with the U.S.

Japanese authorities had determined they were ballistic missiles, Japan's NHK broadcaster and Kyodo News reported.

Thousands of US and South Korean troops are now taking part in joint military drills, which are mainly largely computer-simulated exercises. Hours later North Korea had said it was "carefully examining" plans to strike Guam.

After weeks of relative calm, North Korea has carried out three missile test launches, with USA and South Korean officials describing them as "ballistic missiles" fired toward the East Sea, not far from Japan.

In response to North Koreas expanding nuclear weapons program, South Korea has been moving to strengthen its own capabilities, planning talks with the United States on raising the warhead limits on its missiles and taking steps to place additional launchers to a US anti-missile defense system in the countrys southeast.

Also on Tuesday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson praised Pyongyang for demonstrating "some level of restraint", noting that there had been "no missile launches or provocative acts on the part of North Korea", since the United Nations Security Council voted August 5 to impose a $1 billion sanctions package against the country.

Tillerson called North Korea's "restraint" pleasing and said it could open a pathway for dialogue in the near future.

It is also believed to be developing a solid-fuel missile that could be used for submarine launches.

Tillerson quickly tried to allay fears of a military confrontation, saying there was no sign the threat level from North Korea had changed and that Americans should "sleep well at night".
