Washington Has 'Concerns' About Iran Nuclear Deal

The US wants the International Atomic Energy Agency to inspect Iran’s military sites

"Regrettably, this visit, with the stated goal to 'press the agency, ' is widely perceived by the global community as a manifest and blatant attempt...to put pressure on the agency and adversely affect the professional and impartial nature of the work of the IAEA in carrying out the job entrusted to it", said Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif in a letter to IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano and European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. In a letter dated August 19 but released August 23, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who was the lead negotiator in the nuclear talks, warned about USA adherence to the nuclear deal.

The Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that any move of the United States to exert pressure on the IAEA over Iran's nuclear deal is a violation of the accord, local media reported on Saturday.

She is seeking to increase the Trump administration's understanding of Iran's compliance with the nuclear deal reached under President Obama, and to try and ratchet up pressure on Iran after its recent ballistic missile tests.

"There were already issues in those locations, so are they including that in what they look at to make sure that those issues no longer remain?"

"As good as the IAEA is, it can only be as good as what they are permitted to see", Haley said.

In her official statement following her meeting with Amano on Wednesday, Haley did not mention "military sites" specifically. The pact outlined what Tehran had to do to bring its nuclear program from the brink of weapons-making capacity in exchange for the ending numerous financial, trade and oil sanctions negatively impacting Iran's economy. "They have the authority to look at any suspicious sites now, it's just are they doing it?"

The IAEA is tasked with monitoring Iranian compliance with the deal, a basically technical matter that falls within the agency's area of expertise.

Saudi-led airstrike kills 48 in Yemen
Officials and witnesses told the Associated Press that the death toll was 60 and that the majority of those killed were rebels. Sanaa is packed with armed men and armored vehicles, fueling fears of open clashes between Saleh's forces and the Houthis.

Haley claims that she only wants to question IAEA officials, and criticized Iranian efforts to block nuclear inspectors from visiting certain sites.

"Why would they say that if they had nothing to hide?" Iran's nuclear chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, issued an ominous warning Tuesday, saying that his country could "resume 20-percent enrichment in, at most five days".

Haley said earlier this week that she was "concerned" about whether Iran is adhering to the nuclear deal and that while the watchdog agency is known for its "credibility, professionalism, and seriousness", it "can only be as good as the access Iran grants" it.

Separately on Wednesday, Zarif said in an interview that the IAEA "should not allow questions to be raised about its independence and status in connection with the JCPOA in the global arena".

Hayley said that she is trying to improve upon the nuclear deal by stopping Iran from launching ballistic missiles.

Haley also leveled harsh criticism at Irish Major General Michael Beary, the commander of United Nations forces in Lebanon, accusing him of turning a blind eye to Iran's alleged covert arming of the Hezbollah resistance group.
