But police early this morning put up fences around Alamo Square Park to foil the organizers' plans and closed the park to the public about 10 a.m.

Hundreds of protesters gathered at San Francisco's Alamo Park to denounce white supremacy on August 26, 2017.

The goal of holding the rally, Gibson has said, was to challenge people on the left and the right who are too intolerant of any viewpoints that don't match their own. Concerned about possible violence, city officials have urged residents to stay away from other gatherings on Saturday and Sunday.

The organizers also blamed statements by Mayor Ed Lee and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, for creating a hostile climate against them.

Joey Gibson, the organizer and founder of Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group that has previously hosted rallies attracting white nationalists, discussed the cancelation of the event during a Facebook Live broadcast, in which he said the rally would be "unsafe".

Despite the group having no permit, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said he had no plans to prevent or block the event in advance. Patriot Prayer's news conference is scheduled there later in the day.

I want to reinforce that existing San Francisco law prohibits firearms and weapons in city parks. He said the Crissy Fields event was for moderates and a way to bring together people who believe in free speech and a way "to build a healthy culture to stand against against antifa, Communists, white supremacists, Nazis".

"Do not engage with the members of this group, whose only priority is to incite violence through divisive rhetoric, so as to avoid dignifying their display of hatred", Lee said.

Looking directly at the sun can cause solar retinopathy , retinal damage from exposure to solar radiation, she said. This can cause eye pain and light sensitivity , with symptoms often occurring within 24 hours after exposure.

The larger event was canceled on Friday, but city leaders say they don't trust the group, and fear an impromptu rally will appear in its place, or that unrest and violence may break out at the news conference at Alamo Park.

Small groups of activists and counter-protesters on Saturday were marching the streets of San Francisco and deciding on new gathering points after a far-right rally at Crissy Field was scrapped.

Cummings pleaded for no one to go to her rally because she feared there would be violence and admitted she was scared for her own safety. Counter-protesters had obtained three permits and planned two other rallies at the city's Civic Center and in the Castro neighborhood.

The event was planned for Saturday by a right-wing group known as Patriot Prayer.

The weekend's events kicked off on Friday with a Unite Against Hate rally at the San Francisco Civic Center.

Coming two weeks after bloody altercations between white supremacists, Ku Klux Klan members, neo-Nazis and protesters that resulted in the death of Heather Heyer, a protester who was hit by a auto that an OH man drove into a crowd, whatever happens this weekend in the Bay Area is sure to be in the national spotlight. "We are asking the city to keep us safe".

"I just had this image of alt-right people stomping around in the poop", Tuffington, who said the idea came to him as he was walking his two Patterdale terriers, Bob and Chuck, told The Guardian.
