Trump responded to Clapper's comments during a morning tweet storm.

Clapper told CNN's Jake Tapper he can't show the letter, because he did not keep a copy.

Clapper's criticism of Trump on CNN appeared unhinged after the president's campaign rally in Phoenix.

He also labeled Trump's fiery rhetoric 'downright scary and disturbing'. "It's just so objectionable on so many levels".

"It is absolutely crucial for the United States، and for that matter for the world، for this presidency، for the Republicans، for the Democrats and for our nation at large، that we get to the bottom of this". He's been the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, and most recently, until a year ago when he retired, the Director of National Intelligence.

"I hand-wrote nearly identical short notes to each of the two candidates to accompany the first brief as President-elect; only one actually got deployed - the one to him", he said.

Asked at the National Press Club in Canberra what he thought the critical differences were between Watergate, which brought down Richard Nixon, and Trump's troubles, he replied: "Watergate pales really in my view compared to what we're confronting now".

The Weeknd , who was previously announced as a performer, is now absent on the Performers list of artists on the MTV .com website. Jesse Ignjatovic returns as Executive Producer for the 2017 "MTV Video Music Awards ".

'So I find this very disturbing, ' Clapper added.

President Trump talks about North Korea during a briefing on the opioid crisis, Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J. Tuesday night, in which he berated the media, threatened to shut down the government over funding for his proposed border wall and defended his statements in the wake of violent white nationalist demonstrations in Charlottesville, Va.

'I hit 'em with neo-Nazi, I hit 'em with everything. KKK?

"I think the real Trump came through".

'They're trying to take away our culture.

Instead, Clapper is now in the camp of questioning Trump's fitness to be president, and motives for the tone of his Phoenix remarks.

The CNN guest then turned on Trump's fans. "I'm also beginning to wonder about his motivation. maybe he is looking for a way out", Clapper said.
