The launch was also a milestone for SpaceX, which has now successfully launched 12 rockets this year. SpaceX now has 15 successful booster landings under its belt, marking a key step in its quest for rocket reusability. The company launched FORMOSAT-5 from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

After the rocket puts the FORMOSAT-5 Earth observation satellite into low-Earth orbit, its first stage will attempt to land on a barge in the Pacific Ocean named "Just Read the Instructions". This year, the company has started to make good on its promise to do a mission every two weeks, by launching with more frequency and regularity since May. Still, the company has counted 11 successful missions so far in 2017.

And this is actually good news for SpaceX as a business, as much as Musk may love to cultivate his relationship with the media.

After separating from the second stage of the rocket, the taller, first stage portion powered its engines and made a controlled return to Earth.

SpaceX has always been obsessed with reducing the cost of spaceflight by employing reusable rockets that can launch multiple missions. The company also plans to launch another used booster in September.

United Kingdom says European court won't have direct control post-Brexit
However, she failed to rule out allowing the court to have significant influence on British laws. It presented its position paper on civil judicial cooperation after Brexit on Tuesday 22 August.

Originally slated to fly on SpaceX's discontinued Falcon 1 rocket, Formosat 5 is the first major space mission fully design, manufactured and tested in Taiwan. According to SpaceX, the satellite will "promote space science experiments and research to enhance Taiwan's self-reliant space technology capabilities, and to continue to serve the users of FORMOSAT-2's global imagery services".

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen tweeted: "The #satellite will gather images & data on earth's surface to help evaluate natural disasters".

SpaceX's Falcon 9 is slated to lift off at 2:51PM ET.

SpaceX has a 42-minute launch window for today's FORMOSAT-5 liftoff.
