The government said some Muslim villagers in Yathetaung township in the vicinity of the attacks burned down their dwellings and fled into the nearby Mayu mountain range where the military has reported finding insurgent training camps.

As many as 150 militants were said to be involved in the violence.

. She said gunshots and explosions could be heard and smoke could still be seen Friday evening.

"We are deeply concerned about the security situation in Rakhine State".

The western state is bisected by religious hatred focused on the stateless Rohingya Muslim minority, who are reviled by many Buddhists and perceived as illegal immigrants.

The leader of ARSA, Ata Ullah, has said hundreds of young Rohingya have joined the group, which claims to be waging a legitimate defence against the army and for human rights. ARSA took advantage of the resentment by stepping up recruitment of members.

More than a million members of the Muslim minority Rohingyas reside in Rakhine, where they suffer growing discrimination due to the sectarian conflict which killed at least 160 people in 2012 and displaced almost 120,000 Rohingyas living in 67 refugees camps, the report said.

Also more than 150 extremists attempted to break into the light infantry battalion No. 552 military base.

According to previous estimates by the State Counsellor Office, at least eight police officers, one immigration service worker, and 16 attackers were killed.

The department does say that there is no indication that any Americans have been targeted simply for being American. Most are said to be between rival criminal gangs, but innocent bystanders have been killed in shootings.

ARSA also referred to the report, saying the army in recent weeks had stepped up activity in order to derail any attempt to implement the recommendations.

"The terrorists launched organized attacks on police outposts and police stations in Maungtaw, Buthidaung and Yathedaung Townships simultaneously early this morning". At least six guns were lost to them.

Suu Kyi's office posted pictures of weapons that had been taken from militants, mainly home-made bombs and rudimentary knives and clubs. The commission has six members from Myanmar and three foreigners, including Annan.

Meanwhile, a panel led by the former United Nations chief Kofi Annan finished its one-year research.

This is the most significant outbreak of violence in Rakhine since October 2016, when nine policemen died in similar attacks on border posts.

"The alleged scale and gravity of these attacks mark a worrying escalation of violence", he added. "No cause can justify such brutality and senseless killing", he said. Perpetrators should be held to account.

Amnesty International said there were now fears over how Myanmar's notoriously abusive security forces might respond.

The UN committee conducted a year-long research to find long-term solutions to bring back peace to Rakhine state.
