Man shot after attacking soldiers with a knife in Brussels

A man has been shot in Brussels, Belgium after he attacked soldiers, according to state broadcaster RTBF. Authorities treated the incident as an attempted terrorist attack.

Experts said Daesh terrorist group, responsible for seven of the 10 deadliest attacks since 2012, is now encouraging its followers to use knives and vehicles over firearms and explosives.

Spokeswoman Esther Natus of the federal prosecutor's office, which handles terrorism investigations, said the man twice shouted "Allahu akbar", Arabic for "God is great", as he ran at the soldiers.

The man was known to police for petty crimes but not for terror links, authorities said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday evening that meetings with a high-level delegation of U.S. officials earlier in the day were "helpful and meaningful".

"We do consider it a terror attack", Natus said. One was cut in the face, while the other suffered an injury to the hand.

Brussels is on a heightened security threat level following attacks in Paris and the Belgian capital in 2015 and 2016. It added the "situation is under control".

Photographs showed the street cordoned off with police and troops in the area.

"All our support is with our soldiers", Prime Minister Charles Michel said via Twitter. "With crisis centre we follow situation closely". "The police said he had been shot by soldiers", said Thomas da Silva Rosa, a public affairs consultant.
