Colin Kaepernick supporters rally outside National Football League headquarters in Manhattan

Kaepernick 'Artifacts' Will Be in Smithsonian Black Lives Matter Exhibit

Throughout the 2016 NFL season, quarterback Colin Kaepernick protested the national anthem as a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

Perhaps NFL owners should get more letters about that work, rather than screeds about how outraged fans would be if he was on their team.

Kaepernick stirred controversy a year ago for sitting or kneeling during the anthem, in protest against the treatment of black Americans.

Fans outside the National Football League headquarters on Wednesday said they believed Kaepernick is being unfairly "blackballed" for simply utilizing his first amendment rights. We want him to get signed.

It doesn't seem to factor into the conversation that National Football League owners might want to publicize the kind of charity work players like Kaepernick do. If the meeting is not granted, organizers vowed to boycott the league and singled out Verizon as a league sponsor, urging those in attendance to potentially change their service provider to competitors.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color", Kaepernick said at the time. "There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder".

Roger Goodell Close To Signing Extension Through 2024
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal is maybe not as close as Kaplan indicated, but he still expects the extension to get done. While no terms were reported, the new deal is expected to be similar to his past deal with compensation exceeding $30 million.

Almost a dozen Cleveland Browns did just that before a preseason game against the New York Giants, including a white tight end, Seth DeValve.

"Black Lives Matter", read a sign from one protester. And, on Saturday, Kaepernick attended a rally with 75 current and retired New York City police officers, including famed whistleblower, Frank Serpico. "The event was organized by Sgt. Edwin Raymond and officers wore black T-shirts emblazoned with "#IMWITHKAP" to show solidarity.

He promised $1 million for minority communities and has already distributed $800,000 among several non profits and causes.

The latest $100,000 contribution is earmarked for the Lower East Side Girls Club, NYC, 100 Suits for 100 Men in Queens, and the non-profit Dreamville, which is located in Fayetteville, N.C. At Wednesday's rally, the NAACP handed out T-shirts showing an image of Kaepernick kneeling, with a fist emerging from his hair. "Here's a man, a young player, that nearly carried a team to a championship, to a Super Bowl". The Hall of Famer was the target of racist taunts, death threats and hate mail throughout his historic chase of Babe Ruth's home run record in 1974.

And now the NAACP wants to meet with National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell to get answers.

Some other players followed Kaepernick's actions last season, and some are doing so in this year's pre-season. "I wish somebody would open up and give him a chance to do his thing".
