'Blood on your hands!' Chaos erupts at Charlottesville council meeting

Charlottesville mayor says he was shut out of security talks

The first city council meeting since the August 12 rally, which left 19 injured and one killed in violent confrontations between the alt-right rally-goers and protesters, then resumed for a three-hour listening session.

The vote to cover the statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson was unanimous, and was meant to recognize the city's mourning after a violent demonstration that left one woman dead and scores more injured, according to Paige Rice, clerk of the council. Two state troopers were killed when their helicopter crashed.

In a period of public comment that stretched some four hours, residents faulted the City Council and Democratic Mayor Mike Signer for the violence that broke out when neo-Nazis and white supremacists - ostensibly in town to rally against the removal of Lee's statue - clashed with counterprotesters in the streets. At one point two protesters held up a large sign that read "blood on your hands" while standing on top of the council desks. But angry residents and protesters took over the meeting, hurling expletives at the officials and dressing them down. During a briefing on the Thursday before August 12 with the Police Chief, the Fire Chief, and the City Manager, when I asked the Police Chief what I could do to be helpful during that day as Mayor, he answered, "Stay out of my way".

After remarks from the residents, the City Council informed protesters that they tried to deny a permit for the white supremacist rally but a federal court had ruled in favor of the protest organizers, to which the residents responded unfavorably. "For months, people have come here and you don't listen".

But by Wednesday morning, the shrouds were on their way, she said.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Maren Nelson presided over the trial which began on July 26, according to court records. Thousands of additional cases are pending in Missouri, New Jersey, and DE state courts, as well as New Jersey federal court.

"A USA citizen got murdered", said another speaker.

When the meeting resumed, the agenda was scuttled and the council listened to input from residents. The residents refused to cede control of the room until the authorities promised to release the residents who had been taken away and let people have their say.

Charlottesville officials met privately Thursday to discuss "personnel matters" in the wake of a deadly white nationalist rally, the city's mayor said in a statement in which he also asserted he'd been largely shut out of security preparations for the event.
