Since Koh has confirmed the device, it should be noted that Samsung's smart speaker will enter a crowded market, dominated by the Amazon Echo and Google Home.

DJ Koh, the president of Samsung's mobile division, told CNBC on Wednesday that the company is working on a smart speaker. That timeline isn't specific, but at least it's something. A smart speaker would certainly be one device that users could take advantage of, so it will be interesting to see what Samsung creates. While Bixby suffered a delayed rollout and only formally launched earlier this summer, the assistant is slated to roll out globally soon.

In July the Wall Street Journal reported that a Samsung smart speaker was being developed; however, two weeks later the Korea Herald, also speaking with anonymous sources, said the project had been shelved because Samsung did not believe there was enough money in smart speakers.

At the Note 8 launch event, Samsung's director of product marketing Jonathan Wong announced that Spotify integration is a welcome addition to Bixby. Recognition of personal preferences will increase as time goes by, the company said. Samsung may need to either wait or accept that many people won't use the speaker to its full potential. However, this is the first time when Samsung has outrightly confirmed the existence of such device and also confirmed its arrival. Upcoming products include models from Microsoft and Harman Kardon that feature its Cortana virtual assistant and the Siri-powered Apple HomePod.
