Apple reportedly working on self-driving employee shuttle for its campuses

The new effort is called PAIL, short for Palo Alto to Infinite Loop which the street in Cupertino, California that Apple is located at, and a few miles from Palo Alto, California.

Apple's not alone among tech companies in giving up on making the whole auto. But the company has reportedly since scaled back its autonomous-driving plans. According to the Times, "The shuttle, which has never been reported before, will likely be a commercial vehicle from an automaker and Apple will use it to test the autonomous driving technology that it develops".

The man behind the change seems to be Bob Mansfield.

Apple is now planning on working with other car-makers to get its self-driving tech into the garages and driveways of customers, according to the paper. Apple design guru Jony Ive wanted to focus on a fully self-driving vehicle like those from Google spinoff Waymo.

Fast forward to June 2017, the same Tim Cook said in a Bloomberg interview that Apple has put off any idea of Apple-branded vehicles and are instead "focusing on autonomous" system.

Roger Goodell Close To Signing Extension Through 2024
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal is maybe not as close as Kaplan indicated, but he still expects the extension to get done. While no terms were reported, the new deal is expected to be similar to his past deal with compensation exceeding $30 million.

The shuttle, which is not operational yet, will be the latest move in Apple's development of autonomous auto technology, according to a report from the New York Times on Tuesday. Engineers not only tried to write a "CarOS" to control autonomous vehicles, but investigated details like motorized doors and interior that featured augmented-reality displays, but lacked steering wheels and pedals.

Such lofty goals in such a nascent area of technology, along with alleged "arbitrary or unrealistic deadlines" and "shifting priorities", ensnared Apple, according to the employees.

Google's project, now spun out into its own company called Waymo, is by many accounts the furthest along in self-driving technology. While the bus isn't yet running, it's hard to imagine Apple employees needing a lift and chirping, "Let's go hop in the PAIL!" Even so, Uber's self-driving technology unit is still hiring, and Uber's board continues to support the project, this person told us. Executive Steve Zadesky, originally in charge of Titan, preferred to build a semi-autonomous vehicle, much as Tesla has now.

Even though had not ironed out numerous basics, like how the autonomous systems would work, a team had already started working on an operating system software called CarOS. Strikingly, most of the issues Apple faced with Project Titan reminds us a lot about similar scenarios Nokia and Palm had a decade ago, who were industry leaders in their products back then.
