Jury awards cancer victim a record $417 million in baby-powder lawsuit

J&J faces 4,800 similar claims nationally and has been told to pay more than $300m after verdicts by juries in Missouri.

A California woman who says Johnson & Johnson's talcum powders caused her to develop ovarian cancer has been awarded $417 million, after a jury found that the health care products giant failed to warn her of the risks potentially linked to its Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower products. Thousands of additional cases are pending in Missouri, New Jersey, and DE state courts, as well as New Jersey federal court.

Mark Robinson, an attorney for Ms. Echeverria, said Monday, "These cases are about fighting for justice for women all over California who are suffering from ovarian cancer because of Johnson & Johnson's covering up the truth for so many years".

Carol Goodrich, a J&J spokeswoman, said in a statement that the company will appeal the jury's decision.

There have been concerns for years that using talcum powder, particularly on the genitals, may increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

And prior to both of those cases, three separate juries in St. Louis awarded some $300 million to plaintiffs with similar claims.

Amber Alert issued for 9-year-old boy from Santa Maria
The Santa Maria Police Department said they believe they boy's father, Konstantin Morozov, 48, (pictured right) took the child. Another person from Morozova's church says she saw Natalia and her son, Daniel, who is still missing, just last Sunday at mass.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Maren Nelson presided over the trial which began on July 26, according to court records.

Still, scientists have yet to find a definitive link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, and they say it could be hard to do that.

The court awarded the woman $68 million (around Rs 435 crore) as compensatory damages, and $340 million (around Rs 2,178 crore) as punitive damages. According to evidence in the case, she had used Johnson's Baby Powder for genital hygiene many thousands of times, starting at age 11 and continuing on a regular basis for more than 40 years-not stopping until 2016, when she saw a TV report about possible links between talc and ovarian cancer. A factsheet published by Ovacome says there is no definitive link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. They added their client is dying, but she wants to help other women that developed the disease after using Johnson & Johnson products for 20 to 30 years.

Johnson & Johnson has lost yet another legal battle over its talcum powder.

Johnson & Johnson is preparing to defend itself and its baby powder at upcoming trials in the U.S., Goodrich said.

One plaintiffs' expert showed that talc causes inflammation in human tissues, and that chronic inflammation can cause ovarian cancer.
