Ciro saved Mattias by pulling him under a bed with him after the quake, police said.

Italian authorities first put the quake at a 3.6 magnitude, but later revised it upward to 4.0 - in seismic terms, a modest event.

The quake that hit the island killed one and injured 25 others, officials said.

A popular tourist resort, Ischia is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples, which is home to two active volcanoes (the supervolcano Campi Flagrei and Vesuvius) and seven undersea volcanoes: the Marsili and six others that were discovered past year. Other rescue crews, as well as dogs trained to search for people under rubble, were arriving on ferries from the mainland.

Several buildings in the area collapsed and others had large, ominous cracks. Ischia's only hospital was also hit and had to be partially evacuated.

Together with the close-by island of Capri, Ischia is a most loved island getaway for the European fly set, famous specifically for its warm waters. The church was rebuilt after it, like most of Casamicciola was destroyed by an quake that killed some 2,000 people in 1883.

"It is not normal [for it] to cause building collapses and hospital evacuations", Egidio Grasso, the head of a regional association of geologists, said in a statement.

It struck three days before the first anniversary of a major quake that killed almost 300 people in central Italy, majority in the town of Amatrice.

Previous Naples prosecutor Aldo De Chiara told Corriere della Sera that the greater part of the as of late developed structures on Ischia were worked without fundamental grants, and numerous with low quality bond. "Unfortunately, what we had denounced happened last night".

Fearing potential aftershocks, around 1,000 tourists and residents left the island on ferries overnight, while dozens more waited to leave at the island's four ports early this morning. The town of Casamicciola, where much of Monday's damage was centered, was the site of an 1883 quake that destroyed the town and killed more than 2,000 people.
