Roger Goodell Close To Signing Extension Through 2024

DeMaurice Smith Accuses Roger Goodell Of Lying About Collaboration

According to ESPN and Sports Business Daily, the National Football League is nearing an extension for its commissioner, who is already signed through the 2019 season. Goodell's current contract runs through 2019.

Goodell became commissioner in 2006.

The former PR man earned $32M in fiscal 2015 and more than $210M during his 10 years as commissioner.

While no terms were reported, the new deal is expected to be similar to his past deal with compensation exceeding $30 million. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal is maybe not as close as Kaplan indicated, but he still expects the extension to get done. With some new stadiums having been built, a Las Vegas relocation, a move back to Los Angeles by the Rams and money pouring in, most of those voices are in Goodell's corner as long as things are good for them business-wise. Goodell has also been criticized for his handling of team scandals, such as the Patriots' Spygate and Deflategate, as well as the Saints' Bountygate. The NFL survived a lockout in 2011, before the owners and the union reached an agreement.

Goodell's tenure has seen no shortage of issues, ranging from the league's evolving stance on players accused of domestic violence to its handling of player safety, such as concussions and head trauma. That goes a long way in explaining why the commissioner is close to a contract extension.

The NFL's collective bargaining agreement is set to expire after the 2020 season, and NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith said last week he believes there will be a work stoppage in 2021.
