Judge shot in 'ambush' outside Steubenville courthouse

A suspect was fatally shot after opening fire on a judge near a courthouse in Steubenville, Ohio, on August 21, 2017. Republican Gov. John Kasich said he's been told the judge is expected to survive.

Police in the courthouse quickly came to the judge's rescue, including a probation officer who also shot at the suspect.

"(I) think that everybody needs a little time to settle down a little bit (and) get their thoughts together regarding this very tragic situation", Graham said.

Bruzzese was taken into surgery, authorities said, and was in stable condition, according to the local news station WTOV9. "This was an ambush and an attempted murder on our judge".

Ma'Lik Richmond is now on the Youngstown State football team but isn't allowed to play this season, the school said earlier this month in responding to criticism surrounding his participation.

"This individual laid in wait for our judge", Abdalla said, tearing up during his remarks.

Judge Joseph Bruzzese (bruh-ZEEZ') Jr. was shot Monday morning outside the Jefferson County courthouse in Steubenville (STOO'-behn-vihl), along the Ohio River roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Pittsburgh.

During remarks to reporters Monday afternoon, Abdalla described Bruzzese as an avid hunter and sportsman. He called him fair, hard-working, well-liked and "a tough son of a gun".

According to court records Judge Bruzzese was the original judge who determined that a visiting judge should be appointed to oversee the case against Ma'Lik Richmond and Trent Mays, accused of raping an unconscious 16-year-old in 2012.

Local media reported that the suspect's body could be seen lying next to a vehicle at the drive-thru of a neighboring bank. "My alarm went off at 8 am, and I snoozed it, and a minute or two later, I heard approximately seven or eight gunshots", Cody Allison told WTOV. Police arrested another man, who was in the auto with the suspected shooter, the Herald-Star reported.

The courthouse was closed for the day as local and state authorities helped to secure the scene.
