Korea not to use Korea-US exercises as pretext for provocations

"Not long after the Australian Prime Minister had stated that they would join in the aggressive moves of the United States - even referring to Anzus which exists in name only - the Australian military announced that they would dispatch their troops to the aggressive nuclear exercises of the U.S.", said an unnamed spokesman from North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The Australian government had better devote time and energy to maintaining peace of its own country, instead of forgetting the lessons learned in the past and joining the USA in the moves for nuclear war".

Tensions between the United States and North Korea have grown in recent weeks. During last year's exercises, North Korea launched a ballistic missile from a submarine and put its military on the highest alert.

"The situation on the Korean peninsula has plunged into a critical phase due to the reckless north-targeted war racket of the war maniacs".

The numbers of USA troops involved in this years drill are a reduction from last year and United States defence secretary James Mattis said the reductions were "by design to achieve the exercise objectives".

"I hope South Korea and Japan will join their efforts to overcome the serious security situation", Moon added, according to Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Park Soo-hyun.

Mattis also made clear the US' willingness to use force if North Korea steps out of line.

South Korean President Mun Gehin said the exercises are entirely defensive and not meant to provoke tension in the region.

"In close collaboration with our allies, there are strong military consequences if the DPRK initiates hostilities", said Mattis.

"No one can guarantee that this will not escalate into a real war", it said, calling the annual drills a "rehearsal for nuclear war" and the "most naked expression of hostility" toward the North.

And then we think of little Aria, who does not have those disgusting scenes in her mind but who will never know her dad". While France's Foreign Ministry said that 26 of its citizens had been injured, 11 of whom were in a serious condition.

William McKinney, a retired Army colonel who spent more than 40 years involved in U.S. -Korea military relations and planning, said the U.S. should consider suspending larger exercises - provided it gets something in return.

Still, Moon said the doors for dialogue with the North will always remain open.

North Korea claims it has successfully miniaturized a nuclear weapon.

"If North Korea provokes again, it will face with much harsher sanction and won't stand it in the end".

"President Moon said many wondered why the government did not sufficiently inform the people and former sex slaves themselves then", the spokesman said in a press briefing.

Two dozen Australian defence personnel are taking part in a 10-day military exercise.

In July, North Korea successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), after which US President Donald Trump threatened the North with dire consequences.

China's Global Times newspaper, a state-run tabloid, was scathing of South Korea's decision to proceed with the drills.

As expected, Pyongyang responded harshly to the drills.

"If South Korea really wants no war on the Korean Peninsula, it should try to stop this military exercise".
