Airbnb had canceled bookings of those traveling to Charlottesville when it was discovered they had ties to white nationalist or supremacist groups.

"Over the course of the next few months, there was just a series of other events that caused them to be a massive distraction to us and our team", he said.

Zuckerberg, who is Jewish, posted on his personal Facebook page that he was appalled by the racist assembly in Virginia, where a counter-protester was killed when a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old OH man who had previously expressed neo-Nazi sympathies plowed into a group of people, killing Heather Hoyer, 32.

But neo-Nazi pages weren't the only thing Facebook banned last weekend.

Payment giants Mastercard, Visa, Paypal and American Express have told BBC that they will be taking a tough stance on sites that are engaged in illegal activities like Daily Stormer - that provoke hate, racial intolerance or violence. But in this case, the timing of his Facebook suspension is curious. A poster advertising the group on Facebook's campus ahead of the election read "Trump Supporters Welcome". The news reports also referenced sources that said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had earlier cited harassing messages as a reason for the site's dismantlement.

He has vowed to remove hate speech from Facebook and says he is committed to making "Facebook a place where everyone can feel safe". In a blog post, the company said it "strives to navigate the balance between freedom of expression and open dialogue - and the limiting and closing of sites that accept payments or raise funds to promote hate, violence and intolerance".

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday vowed the social network will actively fight against extremism and violence, after what happened in Charlottesville over the weekend and in the following days. Spokeswoman Ruchika Budhraja acknowledges this is a hard task, as determining what is hate speech is more hard than something like a beheading video or child pornography.

Many on Twitter were skeptical that Facebook would really remove hateful posts, and anxious that if they did it would interfere with free speech rights.

Facebook has had a tough time managing diversity in the workforce.

One main problem here is that Facebook isn't clarifying what the offensive content in question was.

GoDaddy and Cloudflare did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reddit and Facebook have banned entire groups dedicated to hate speech.

The site also asked users to report anyone who appears to be involved in a hate group. Anonymous identities, as Facebook well knows, are often an invitation for harassment because of the perceived lack of consequences. If the social media company were more transparent about how it classifies hate speech, not only would users be more aware of the rules of the road, but public scrutiny would likely prevent it from holding such lopsided polices in the first place.

In the wake of in the United States town of Charlottesville, the tech industry has started to some of their services from groups associated with the far-right and those espousing racial intolerance.

So, with Leeds facing Sunderland in a Saturday evening fixture, it seemed the ideal way for Wood to wave goodbye to the club. Leeds have insisted Wood is not for sale despite reports Burnley are prepared to increase their offer to £20million.
