Regional officials said seven people were taken to hospital, with the figure confirmed by investigators, who lowered an earlier toll of eight wounded.

Russia's Interior Ministry said the assailant has been "tentatively identified" as a resident of the city in his 20s, but he has not been named.

A criminal case was initiated under the article "attempted murder". No-one was killed in the attack.
