Calls to remove Confederate monuments, symbols multiply

Dallas lawmaker wants Confederate plaque outside his office removed 'immediately'

U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) tweeted Wednesday, he would introduce legislation to take Confederate statues out of the U.S. Capitol building.

Under current law, states, not Congress, make their own decisions about what statues they place in the US Capitol, with approval from the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress, which oversees the Capitol's National Statuary Hall collection.

President Donald Trump is strongly criticizing efforts to remove memorials and tributes to the Confederacy. If we do not learn from our history, we are doomed to repeat it.

The heated nationwide debate over the removal of monuments to the Confederacy reached the Capitol Hill Thursday when Pelosi called on House Speaker Paul Ryan to start the process for removing memorials for leaders of the Confederacy from the marbled halls of the United States legislature.

"Also, given the recent tragic events in Charlottesville, Virginia, I can not think of a better time than the present to discuss the removal of all Confederate iconography from the Texas Capitol Complex", Johnson wrote, asking for a meeting of the board to discuss the issue and requesting an inventory of such iconography at the Capitol.

The statue of Edmund Kirby Smith is already set to be replaced, but lawmakers failed to agree last spring on whom to replace Smith with. Most of those Confederate memorials are located in southern states.

"I think it wiser", Lee wrote, "not to keep open the sores of war, but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife & commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered".

It's not just in Texas' cities that the debate over Confederate monuments is heating up.

Centered in the Deep South but stretching from California to MA, roughly 1,500 Confederate symbols still exist on public land more than 150 years after the conclusion of the Civil War, according to 2016 data from the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based advocacy nonprofit organization that tracks civil rights and hate crimes in the United States. McGaughy says Speaker Straus replied to them, saying he was in favor of forming a committee to discuss the monuments, but that the committee never met.

"They shouldn't be removed".

"Whether we like it or not this is what our history is and to me it's just like going to New York City right now and taking down the monument of those who perished in 9/11", LePage told WGAN radio during a weekly interview. While numerous monuments came hand-in-hand with Jim Crow enforcement, they are still "historically significant and essential to understanding a critical period of our nation's history".

"It's time for Florida lawmakers to call a special session to replace Florida's Confederate statue in our nation's Capitol", Wasserman Schultz said. But the House turned down their top choice, African-American educator Mary McLeod Bethune.
