The attack is being widely reported throughout Europe as details continue to flow in.

"We started running towards our vehicle and, as we got there, my boyfriend said a woman had been stabbed several times in the neck", she told Reuters.

Two people have been killed and eight injured in a mass stabbing in Finland on Friday, according to Sky News.

The attacker has been taken into custody. They said they had yet to establish the identity of the man who appeared to be of foreign origin, or his motive.

Finland is traditionally peaceful but the Finnish Security Intelligence Service raised the terrorism threat level in June, saying it had become aware of more threats to the country.

A press conference addressing the incident will be held at 16:00 GMT. At least one remains at large. "We were sitting on a terrace just next to the square and this woman just screamed like hell and this guy was standing in front of her with a huge knife just stabbing people".

Three people are now undergoing surgery, YLE reports, citing hospital sources.

Finnish television channel MTV said security had been heightened at Helsinki's global airport but didn't give details.

Local media in Finland say one person has died after a man stabbed several people in the south-western city of Turku. According to CBS News, one person was arrested. The tweet reads there were apparently shouts of "Allahu Akbar" and that it is a terrorist attack.

"Police are looking for other possible perpetrators of the crime in Turku", Finnish security forces said on Twitter. More injuries were also reported in that tourist town.

Police assured Turku residents the city was safe on Friday evening.

Turku is a city on the southwest coast of Finland at the mouth of the Aura River, in the region of Southwest Finland.
