The British Foreign Office guidance for Spain reads: "Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Spain."Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners".

A witness told local media the situation was "very tense" and that all surrounding shops were being evacuated. Fleming heard a bang, possibly from someone rolling down a store shutter, as more people raced by.

Many in the football world have extended their condolences to those killed in the Catalan city after a van ploughed through crowds on La Rambla on Thursday. The path is lined with shops and stalls.

It is now being reported that the driver of the van fled on foot after it crashed.

There's still a lot of confusion about how many people were hurt or injured in the attack. Police said 13 people were killed and more than 50 wounded in what they called a terror attack. The group has claimed responsibility for vehicle attacks carried out in Europe, as well as on the campus of Ohio State University a year ago. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to The Washington Post. "And our second priority is the police investigation, to find the people responsible of this attack and anyone who has helped them directly or indirectly". Some video from the scene near the restaurant seems to suggest that the gunmen have let at least some of the hostages go.

According to AFP, there were several injured in the crash. Attackers don't need bombs or much training-just a vehicle, basic driving skills, and the will to plow into a crowd.

Spanish newspaper El Periodico said two armed men were holed up in a bar in Barcelona's city centre, and reported gunfire in the area, though it did not cite the source of the information. Anyone in the region should stay where they are, officials say, and communicate via social media instead of telephone to avoid overwhelming the phone system. "He went up to the curb to trample on the people" and the van plowed into the crowd "as if it were a field of corn cobs". I'm close to the area. Police have arrested a man in connection with the incident. They're urging people in the area to remain calm.

El Periodico said: 'The CIA had already warned the Mossos d'Esquadra that Barcelona might be a terrorist target.

The boulevard runs from the city's Plaça de Catalunya (Catalonia Square) to the Christopher Columbus monument at the seafront.

Aymar Anwar, a human rights lawyer attending a conference, was walking down Las Ramblas when the attack happened.

A van mowed through crowds of tourists on Barcelona's most famous avenue on Thursday, killing about a dozen people in an attack that was claimed by Islamic State.

UPDATE (1:20PM): Reports on the number of killed and injured have been scattered throughout the day, but Catalan police have confirmed that one person is dead and 32 have been injured.

James Fields is charged with ramming his Dodge Charger into other cars and plowing over people who were protesting white supremacists. Hats, handbags and other items were strewn nearby.

This statement was issued after the program announced via Twitter the team and entire travel party is "safe and accounted for" following the terrorist attack.
