J&K LeT commander killed in encounter with security forces

Acting on a specific information regarding the movement of Lelhari, police along with Army and the CRPF laid ambush at Banderpora, Drubgam and Chandgam areas, the spokesman said.

According to police sources, Lelhari was travelling in a vehicle with the driver and a civilian at Banderpora village in Koil area, when security forces tracked him down.

"The militant tried to flee and fired upon the joint party which was retaliated in which he was killed", the spokesman said.

"Two policemen were injured in the initial firing after which an encounter started in which Lelhari was killed", police said. "Excellent work boys!", Vaid wrote on his official Twitter handle.

Five soldiers were also injured in the encounter, two among them succumbed to injuries while two other terrorists escaped.

Local residents said the vehicle was intercepted and it led to a very brief encounter. "He (Ayub) was one of the most wanted terrorists and his killing is a great success for the forces", Superintdent Police (SP) Pulwama, Aslam Chowdhary told DH. "These designations seek to deny Hizbul Mujahideen the resources it needs to carry out terrorist attacks", the State Department said. His close associate and neighbour Arif Nabi Dar alias Rehan alias Arif Lalhari was killed along with the LeT's Abu Dujana in an encounter in a Pulwama village on August 1.

Ayub Lelhari is the third top militant commander killed in Kashmir this month. The police said was involved in number of offences including grenade attacks on Army camp, police post and killing of Sarpanch.
