The legendary Estadio Azteca - host of two World Cup title matches - as well as Vancouver's BC Place, where the United States won the 2015 Women's World Cup, were among three venues in Mexico and nine Canadian stadiums under consideration.

World Cup stadiums must, among other things, seat at least 40,000 people and meet the minimum field size standards of world soccer governing body, FIFA.

FedEx Field, the Washington Redskins' suburban home, is listed as the proposed D.C. area stadium.

Canada, U.S.A., and Mexico are working together to secure the tournament and have submitted a long list of 44 potential host cities.

The committee will create a short list of interested host sites in late September before those cities prepare a final bid in January.

Assam reels under floods
The recent toll is apart from the 84 persons who died in the first wave of floods that hit the state between April to June. The deluge has claimed 15 lives in the past four days and displaced more than 23 lakh people, reported NDTV .

Minnesota United, the state's Major League Soccer team in its inaugural season, is building a soccer-specific, natural-grass stadium in the St. Paul Midway neighborhood, to open in 2019.

The United Bid committee will shortlist cities for inclusion in the bid next month before submitting the North American proposal in March 2018. The joint North American bid would then go up against Morocco before the FIFA Congress to see which bid will host the cup. In December 2010, however, a controversial Federation Internationale de Football Association vote gave the 2018 tournament to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar. "The bid committee will also evaluate cities on their commitment to sustainable event management, aspirations to develop soccer, and the positive social impact they anticipate in the local community and beyond stemming from the event". FIFA will choose the host at the FIFA Congress in June 2018.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature an expanded 48 teams for the first time.

Foxboro, Mass., staged games at the 1994 FIFA World Cup at the now-demolished Foxboro Stadium.

Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi said the potential for Canada to host World Cup games is "fantastic". Other regional candidates include Atlanta, Birmingham, Charlotte, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans and Tampa.
