BC Green Party leader slams NDP grizzly hunt ban as 'political spin'

BC government bans grizzly bear trophy hunt

BC government bans grizzly bear trophy hunt

Wildsight welcomes the ban on trophy hunting of grizzly bears announced yesterday, but we are unclear what a meat hunt will mean for the bears.

The ban will take effect November 30 - after this year's hunt.

"It's not a matter of numbers, it's a matter of society has come to the point in B.C. where they are no longer in favour of the grizzly bear trophy hunt".

Donaldson said that government will consult with First Nations and stakeholder groups this fall to determine next steps and mechanisms as B.C. moves toward ending the trophy hunt.

But the problem facing grizzly bears, like so many species across the province, is much broader than hunting. "While the trophy hunt will end, hunting for meat will be allowed to continue", the statement read.

"I'm not sure how this will appease the concerns of anyone", he said on Monday.

According to the government, there are an estimated 15,000 grizzly bears in the province.

Iran parliament ratifies legislation to counter United States anti-Iran moves
In response the country's parliament has now given initial approval to a bill to increase spending on their missile programme. He further said American officials should be aware that the legislation was just the first step against anti-Iran measures.

He added that leaving those parts behind would actually be offensive to many B.C. hunters as wasteful.

Instead, Weaver said he wants to see legislation, along the lines of the Greens' own 2017 bill, which would remove preferential treatment for foreign hunters, and require that all usable meat be taken in any hunt. How effective the trophy hunting ban is will depend entirely on the specific regulations. Big-game hunters may still hunt grizzlies, taking home photos of themselves with their kill instead of the bear's hide, head and paws, which will be prohibited. A 2012 report by Stanford University in conjunction with the Center for Responsible Travel found that bear viewing groups in the Great Bear Rainforest generated "more than 12 times more in visitor spending than bear hunting".

Grizzly hunt opponents Wilderness Committee applauded the decision.

"We're glad the senseless killing of grizzly bears is coming to an end".

In September 2015, graphic footage of two hunters killing a grizzly bear incurred the wrath of thousands after a B.C. conservation group posted the video to its Facebook page. "Premier Horgan is to be commended for ending this cruel and barbaric blood sport for good", said Foy.

But Andrew Weaver, of the Green Party, dismissed the ban as a stunt. It appears to me that the NDP were trying to play to environmental voters in the election campaign without thinking through their policies. Almost 4,000 grizzly bears slaughtered for so-called sport.

Monday's announcement included plans to begin consultation on a renewed wildlife management strategy for B.C. that will include "dedicated funding for wildlife and habitat conservation", said Donaldson.
