After Charlottesville, Kentucky mayor addresses future of Confederate statues

Public input urged as Lexington nears decisive moment on Confederate statues

A counter protester was killed when a auto ran into a crowd in Charlottesville, and two police officers died when a helicopter crashed.

We agree with Mayor Jim Gray that it is only right that the statues of Civil War luminaries be removed from Cheapside Park, a place where thousands of humans were auctioned off to the highest bidder. The Kentucky Military Heritage Commission must approve the plan after the Lexington City Council votes on it.

Some cities around the nation are calling for the statues' removal similar to the way the Confederate battle flag was shunned by some following a mass shooting by a white supremacist inside a SC church.

Heimbach says he'll organize his groups to oppose any effort to move two Confederate statues from the lawn of the former Fayette County Courthouse.

As one speaker said Tuesday, how can we welcome people from across the country and the world to a location where many of our citizens won't feel welcome? The city has been warned the commission would not green light moving the statues unless it found a new home for Hunt Morgan and Breckinridge. Jefferson, Washington. We can't erase the history of those men as slave-owners.

"It's the right thing to do", he told the Post. Gray asked the Lexington city council to support his petition for removal next week.

A Confederate statue in Louisville, some 80 miles from Lexington, was vandalized over the weekend. White supremacists had originally chose to hold their rally in the Virginia town known more for being a quiet college town than political activism, as a result of plans to remove a statue of Robert E Lee there.

Debate over the monuments in downtown Lexington dates back to the summer of 2015, when vandals painted "Black lives matter" on the statue of Morgan.

Lexington honors history. But that history must be accurate, he said.

A white nationalist leader says his group will organize against efforts in Lexington to move two Confederate-era statues.

In a tweet, Lexington's mayor said "we can not let them define our future".
