China urges Trump to avoid 'trade war'

The administration official who confirmed that Trump would sign the order contended it was unrelated to the showdown with North Korea. They were not authorised to publicly discuss the private call and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Still, Chinese leaders oppose blocking all trade with the impoverished North, which they argue might cause widespread hunger.

Trump also has oscillated between taking tough actions on unfair trade practices and dangling a more lenient approach as a carrot to induce China to do more to rein in North Korea.

Trump will on Monday formally order a probe into China's intellectual property practices, though United States officials said it was not linked to the North Korean matter. "It's not going to continue like that", Trump said from his golf club in Bedminster, N.J.

"I think China can do a lot more", Trump told reporters Thursday.

China will halt iron, iron ore and seafood imports from North Korea starting Tuesday, following through on new United Nations sanctions after US pressure for Beijing to strong arm Pyongyang over its ally's nuclear program.

The trade investigation could strain relations between the US and China as the two countries wrestle with the unpredictable situation over North Korea.

An official told reporters the president would order his trade office on Monday to look into whether to launch an investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 of possible Chinese theft of USA technology and intellectual property.

Iran parliament ratifies legislation to counter United States anti-Iran moves
In response the country's parliament has now given initial approval to a bill to increase spending on their missile programme. He further said American officials should be aware that the legislation was just the first step against anti-Iran measures.

Chinese President Xi Jinping moved to calm nerves on Friday, telling the USA president during a phone call that all sides should maintain restraint and avoid inflammatory comments.

Landing a blow against China would also be more complicated if the USA chooses to target sectors where the countries are connected along global supply chains, which make up a most of their bilateral trade.

Trump also stressed the importance of maintaining close contacts on major issues and strengthening exchanges. If USTR moves forward, the investigation could take as long as a year.

"A decision to trigger Section 301 today is problematic because it would provide additional fuel to the already simmering argument that the Trump administration is undoing the American commitment to rules-based trade and decades of work to establish global cooperation", he said.

China should sue the USA for trade protectionism if President Donald Trump orders an investigation into China's intellectual property practices, Chinese state media said in an unsigned editorial on Sunday.

That prompted a defiant Pyongyang to threaten a missile attack on Guam, a tiny United States territory in the Pacific that is home to major USA air and naval facilities.

The president of China said that this issue should be addressed through dialogue and negotiations, in order to achieve a political solution.

The Washington Post speculated that the investigation could be "a source of leverage to push China to do more to help contain a rising security threat from North Korea, which counts Beijing as its only powerful ally". But if the U.S and South Korea try to carry out strikes and overthrow the North Korean government, "China will prevent them from doing so".
