Lim and his family had not seen each other in person since the pastor was arrested in 2015 and sentenced to a life of hard labour in prison for crimes against the state.

Hyeon Soo Lim, 62, sat in the front row of a packed worship hall at Light Presbyterian Church in Mississauga, a Toronto suburb.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted Friday morning that "military solutions" are "locked and loaded" should North Korea act unwisely, capping off a week that saw North Korea lay out plans for a military strike on Guam, an American territory in the region.

South Korea, the USA and others often accuse North Korea of using foreign detainees to wrest diplomatic concessions, and foreigners have said after their release that their declarations of guilt were coerced while in North Korean custody.

Lim is a South Korean-born Canadian in his 60s.

Mr. Lim is expected to attend a service at the church on Sunday morning.

Global Affairs Canada issued a statement on Lim's release Saturday asking that his family's request for privacy be respected.

The canadian government had thanked the Swedish diplomat, for his key role in the release of the pastor.

The pastor, who served in one of the largest churches in Canada, had travelled to North Korea regularly on humanitarian missions before his detainment. "Now more than ever, he's never felt more Canadian".

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has pledged Canada's support to the United States, calling North Korea's nuclear missile program "a grave threat to the world".

"We are also very clear that we stand by all of our allies, very much including the United States".

"He is doing very well, considering everything he has gone through", he said.

A number of Christian missionaries - mostly ethnic Koreans who are USA citizens - have been arrested in the past, with some of them only allowed to return home after intervention by high-profile U.S. political figures.

"There were a lot of calls, a lot of visits to Ottawa, a lot of back and forth between two different governments", James Lim said. "When they are threatened, we are there".
