Northumbria Police gave no details of what caused the explosion, but confirmed on Twitter that "there is nothing to indicate at this time that this is linked to terrorism".

She was treated for burns and rushed to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary in a serious but stable condition.

The woman had been in her bathroom getting ready to go out when the explosion happened, the emergency services added.

In an earlier post, she said that God must exist as "how the hell can anyone survive that explosion".

Gas engineers were also there, along with search specialists with dogs to make sure there were no other casualties trapped.

One house has been completely destroyed by the blast while a neighbouring property has been heavily damaged, with debris scattered across the road.

Police are aware of an explosion at 61 Rosslyn Avenue in Ryhope just before 9 this morning (Friday).

Another said: "There has been a huge explosion".

The area was quickly flooded with police, fire crews and paramedics and the air ambulance was also at the scene.

Neighbour Tracey Pounder, 51, said: "I heard an almighty bang".

He's spoken with Sun FM and could only say one word to describe what he's seen - "Shocked!". He said: "I saw the window move and the house shook".
