South Africa's leader accused of 'derelict' work

SA President Zuma faces no confidence secret ballot

The party however welcomed the secret ballot decision and reiterated that Zuma was going to survive the vote.

South Africa's scandal-hit President Jacob Zuma has survived an ouster attempt in the country's National Assembly.

The reputation of Mr Zuma, who spent a decade in prison for his anti-apartheid activities and has been popular among some South Africans for his personal warmth and populist policies, has been tarnished by allegations of impropriety.

The African National Congress has 249 seats in the 400-seat parliament and the opposition controls 151 seats.

If the motion is successful, Zuma along with 72 cabinet ministers would be forced to step down immediately, prompting the speaker to act as interim president for 30 days until the national assembly appoints a new president and cabinet.

The former liberation movement has led South Africa since the first all-race elections in 1994, but some parliament members warn that the ANC will lose support if Zuma is allowed to stay in office. But the ANC parliamentary party did not address these criticisms in a statement following the vote, which it called a "soft coup".

The 75-year-old Zuma, in power since 2009, secured 198 votes to the opposition's 177 in a no-confidence motion held by secret ballot as loyal ANC lawmakers rallied to his support.

South Africa's largest opposition party, Democratic Alliance (DA), said Zuma and his ANC had "nothing to celebrate".

Members of the public also wanted their voice heard in relation to the vote, and throughout Tuesday tens of thousands of pro- and anti-Zuma supporters marched in every major city in the country. Although the vote didn't pass, the numbers suggest that a chunk of ANC MPs didn't vote to reject the motion.

The motion, submitted by the Democratic Alliance, accused Zuma of "derelict leadership" and said the president has "lost all sense of rationality".

The party has also vowed to continue with its legal action against Zuma, and will be joining the EFF's impeachment proceedings at the Constitutional Court.

"I have faced seven kinds of vote of no confidence".

"Mbete's decision was made knowing that Zuma will be secure", said Darias Jonker, of the New York-based Eurasia political analysis consultancy. And vote to remove Jacob Zuma today.

Academic and political analyst Richard Calland said the ANC's victory would prove shortlived because the party's woes were confirmed by a "not insignificant" number of its members casting their ballots with the opposition camp.
