Local MLA reacts to Clark's resignation

Former Premier Christy Clark, pictured here on a visit to Oliver with MLA Linda Larson, announced Friday that she is stepping down as the B.C. Liberal Leader effective August 4.

Clark made her intentions known in a brief statement on Friday, and will also be giving up her seat in Kelowna.

Clark had said she would stay on as opposition leader.

Larson says Coleman will be assembling a shadow cabinet and getting caucus prepared for whenever the new NDP Premier John Horgan calls the legislature back.

"Should the government fail the test of confidence in the house, as seems likely, I would be given the job of leader of the Opposition", she said.

The decision comes one month after the B.C. Liberals were defeated in a non-confidence vote in the legislature.

"Together, we have achieved so much - winning a comeback election victory that nearly nobody thought possible, positioning British Columbia firmly as Canada's leading economy, and laying a strong foundation for future generations to achieve their dreams here", she said.

"I'm certain that British Columbia's best days, and our parties, are still ahead of us", added Clark. "I'm not interested in running for leader", he said.

"B.C. owes her a debt of gratitude for the leadership she's provided".

Paul Duckett, a regular swimmer at the beach, said he has swum there for sixteen years and never confronted any flesh-eating bugs. The incident comes nearly a year after a massive outbreak of tiny "sea lice" at Florida beaches .

Coleman praised Clark's record as premier and said she "saved the party" during a challenging 2013 election.

"I've never worked with anybody with more passion and love, and strength of leadership in my entire life", he said.

The VOICE wrote: "It's time the Liberals dumped Clark and moved on with a new, respected leader like Andrew Wilkinson".

It was during her term that the government unilaterally curtailed teachers' contracts.

She mounted a failed effort for the Vancouver mayoralty, then became a radio talk-show host until 2010. Strikingly, she had the support of only one caucus member, but she won on the third ballot over Falcon.

LAST week, The VOICE reported about a very interesting article - "BC Liberal election post mortem heaps blame on Clark" - by well-known investigative journalist Bob Mackin in "theBreaker.news" in which he reported that the BC Liberal party brass met behind closed doors and let out their frustration left and right.

She gained prominence in Gordon Campbell's Liberal Party where she was promoted to deputy premier and education minister.

Telford said he doesn't expect the NDP government to call a by-election in her Kelowna West riding - a BC Liberal stronghold - very quickly.

The truest signs of leadership, whether it's politics, business or sports, is putting others first, by crediting everyone else for the wins and taking sole responsibility for the loses.
