Pakistan to suffer slow internet after cable fault

Internet services have been restored across the country after a 38-hour-long disruption caused by a fault in an undersea internet cable, said the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) on Sunday evening.

PTCL General Manager Imran Janjua told Geo News that internet services had begun to be restored countrywide today, after a major outage in the worldwide submarine cable system IMV led to disruption in internet services over the weekend.

A fault occurred near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in one of the worldwide submarine cable systems IMEWE early Saturday that providing internet bandwidth to Pakistan. "Experts initially thought the cut was under the sea but after a bit of research, they figured out that the cable that was cut is on land".

Pakistan Telecommunications Limited (PTCL) stated the company has successfully arranged for additional bandwidth through our global cable systems & partners.

"For most of Sunday, PIA's main source had not been restored and we were running on our back-up system but it is up and running on the PTCL system now", he said.

Apart from hitting other activities, the interruption forced authorities to cancel two domestic and six worldwide flights at capital's only airport. Flights to Medina, Manchester and Karachi have also been cancelled.PI-211, which was scheduled to reach Islamabad from Dubai, was cancelled as well.

According to sources custom officials at Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Islamabad have seized 700 latest cellular phones into custody and have started probing the matter.
