US calls off rescue for three marines missing off Australia

The Australian navy found the wreck on Monday, one day after a search and rescue effort for the final three missing Marines aboard the plane was suspended.

The Marine Corps did not say what caused the crash, but indicated it is under investigation.

"Dive team members finalized planning in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S".

"Royal Australian Navy (RAN) survey ship HMAS Melville arrived in Shoalwater Bay overnight", Australian Defense Minister Marise Payne said in a statement Monday.

Twenty three people were rescued when the aircraft crashed on Saturday, but three remain unaccounted for.

The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit is operating with the USS Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group as part of a regularly scheduled deployment in the region, he said.

The Australian Navy found the missing MV-22 Osprey after it went down in the ocean while trying to land.

The Australian Navy has located a missing USA military aircraft that crashed off Australia's east coast on August 6th, 2017. The Osprey was approaching the USS Green Bay, an amphibious transport dock ship, about 4 p.m. local time when it hit the water with 26 Marines aboard, according to the Marines.

According to ABC News, the Marines' next of kin had been notified, and Australia's defense force was assisting the Americans with the recovery effort. They have been involved in a series of crashes in recent years.

A White House official said President Donald Trump had been briefed by chief of staff John Kelly on the mishap of an aircraft off the east coast of Australia.

Most recently, an Osprey crashed in January during a special operations raid on al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen, leaving two servicemembers injured.

A squadron of Ospreys is based at the Marines' Futenma base on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa.

USA military forces have been operating in the area as part of a joint training exercise called Talisman Sabre.
