US Marine Corps- MV22 Osprey aircraft

Three US Marines are missing after an MV-22 Osprey crashed into the waters off the coast of Queensland, Australia, Saturday afternoon, ABC reports.

The Osprey is a tilt-rotor aircraft that takes off and lands like a helicopter, but flies like a plane.

The search is being undertaken by ships, small boats and aircraft from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Bonhomme Richard Strike Group.

Four Bell-Boeing MV-22 Osprey aircraft were in Australia from US Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268, landing in Darwin at the end of April.

"We will provide more detail as they become available".

'Our thoughts are with the crew and families affected'.

A MV-22 Osprey carrying 26 military personnel went down about 4 p.m. local time Saturday, according to Marine officials.

An MV-22 Osprey was destroyed earlier this year during a controversial raid by U.S. forces in Yemen, after three crew members were injured in a "hard landing". Last month, a cargo plane carrying 15 Marines and one sailor crashed in western MS, killing all aboard.

The Marine Corps did not say what caused the crash but indicated it is under investigation. The helicopter has a capacity of 32 people.

The aircraft had been in Queensland, Australia as part of the massive Talisman Sabre joint training exercise between USA and Australian armed forces, which ended on July 25. It has entered the coast of Shoalwater Bay when it crashed.

In December past year an MV-22 Osprey made what the Marines called a "controlled landing" just off the coast of Okinawa during a night training flight that left the aircraft in pieces.
