Bomb blast at mosque during prayers – FBI probe after 'device hurled through window'

Bloomington police Chief Jeff Potts said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blast.

An explosion caused by what the Federal Bureau of Investigation called "a destructive device" rocked a Bloomington Islamic center at dawn Saturday, just as a small group of worshipers had gathered for prayers.

There were 15 to 20 people inside the mosque when the blast happened.

"It was 5 a.m.", Omar told the newspaper.

Neither the Bloomington Police Department, which initially responded to the explosion, nor the Federal Bureau of Investigation speculated on a motive for the incident, though some religious leaders and politicians condemned it as a possible hate crime.

The blast happened at around 5 a.m.at the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington, south of Minneapolis.

An explosion on Saturday morning at a mosque in a Minneapolis suburb shattered windows in the imam's office but did not injure anyone, officials said.

The mosque had recently been the target of harassment, receiving threatening and hateful messages, Mr. Omar told The Star Tribune.

The American Airlines flight 5242 was preparing for takeoff from the terminal at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Witnesses said it was a typical landing until the emergency door opened and the plane filled with sunlight.

"If a bias motive is proven, this attack would represent another in a long list of hate incidents targeting Islamic institutions nationwide in recent months", Malik said.

Trevin Miller, who lives across the street from the mosque, said the explosion woke him up.

"One of our congregation members came out immediately and saw a truck fleeing ... at high speed", he said at a press conference.

"The churches around and synagogues... nearly all of them came down and showed their support", Omar said.

Asad Zaman, the executive director of Muslim American Society of Minnesota, called the explosion an "arson attack" and says the blast may have been the result of a small fire bomb.

Minnesota Sen. Al Franken said on Twitter that he was "horrified" by the incident.

This story has been corrected to show that the group is called the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, not the Muslim-American Association of Minnesota. "It's a place where Minnesotans are gathering to create community, to talk to their neighbors, to learn about our world and each other, and to help care for children".
