England wins toss and bats in final test vs. South Africa

England claimed the win by 239 runs to go 2-1 up with one more Test to play in the series

At tea, South Africa were 93 for three in reply to England's first innings 362 - a deficit of 269 runs.

England were rocking a touch before a solid partnership of Stokes and Jonny Bairstow calmed proceedings for Root's men.

England leads 2-1 in a seesaw series that has swung back and forth dramatically: England won the first test convincingly, South Africa dominated the second test, and England responded with a heavy win in the third game.

Hashim Amla looked in typically stylish touch while making 30, punching Stuart Broad off the back foot for a well-struck four.

Earlier, Roland-Jones, the nightwatchman who didn't actually face a ball the previous evening, soon skewed a catch to point and Moeen was held in the slips.

Roland-Jones then dismissed Amla for the third time in this series, the South African playing a terrible shot to a awful delivery that Bairstow gathered down the legside.

"We thought in the second innings at The Oval he showed real application (scoring 48) and he really applied himself and got stuck in".

After several overs of determined defence, a mix-up almost saw Bavuma run out only for bowler Moeen Ali to miss the stumps as he gathered a throw from mid-off. Any fluency gradually evaporated so that it was nearly a relief when he was neatly caught at slip by Ben Stokes for a painstaking 24.

Donald Trump says Foxconn could triple investment to US$30 billion
The headline of this story has been corrected to reflect that Trump referenced a $30 billion investment, not $3 billion. Other states that Foxconn said it was looking at were Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Each of England's top six made starts, including the captain Joe Root, who went past 5000 runs in the course of his 52 - an innings which also equalled John Edrich's England record of ten consecutive matches with at least a half-century.

Bairstow had a let-off when he was given out for four, caught at slip by Dean Elgar off Maharaj though replays indicated the ball had bounced before Elgar claimed the catch and Bairstow was duly reprieved.

Having gone on to fifty in 100 balls, Bairstow scored 49 from his next 45 deliveries before he was cruelly robbed of a deserved hundred, given out LBW to Keshav Maharaj.

The 27-year-old farmed the strike expertly, regularly orchestrating a single off the last ball of each over to protect number 11 Anderson, while finding the gaps in the field with an array of deft cuts and firm drives, as he raced first to a half-century and then closed in on a ton.

Hampshire left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, who did not play at The Oval after featuring in the first two Tests of this series, was retained in the squad.

But the England wicketkeeper was still one run short of three figures when he missed a sweep of his own and was lbw to the slow left-armer despite his attempt to overturn the decision on review.

Before play, a presentation was made to James Anderson after the Pavilion End at Old Trafford, his Lancashire home ground, was officially renamed the James Anderson End in honour of England´s all-time leading Test wicket-taker.

Anderson's quartet of scalps came after he helped Jonny Bairstow put on 50 for the tenth wicket in England's first innings - although it should be noted that his contribution was just four not out!
