After Nitish broke from the grand alliance on 26 July, several RJD and Congress members expressed shock over the "betrayal".

However, the court clarified that the apex court, in Bommai case, had laid down that the main criteria for formation of government was floor test and in the present case, the newly formed government won the trust vote in the assembly. However, on July 31, PM Narendra Modi led Centre faced embarrassment in Rajya Sabha as their new allies failed to back it with both attendance and support for the Constitutional amendment bill on backward classes.

Addressing a press conference, Jagdanand Singh said that Nitish doesn't deserve to be the Chief Minister as a number of criminal charges have been filed against him.

"It is now JD (U)'s headache and not ours", a top BJP leader said. He questioned Nitish's ideology and principles. "I have full faith in him and hope he will strike at benami properties in a big way", said Kumar.

He dismissed as hypothetical questions about the JD-U joining the union cabinet. "He has told us he is with us", Lalu Yadav told NDTV. On Monday, Kumar had said there was no one who had the capacity to challenge Modi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
