Five ways that Jeanne Moreau mastered her own take on French chic

As of yet, the circumstances surrounding her death have not been released, but the French President has already paid tribute to the star.

The French actress Jeanne Moreau was a lion of worldwide cinema, projecting ferocious intelligence, unapologetic independence and staggering beauty throughout a career that spanned more than six decades, with almost 150 acting credits to her name. The bisexual director Tony Richardson left his wife Vanessa Redgrave for Moreau, but that relationship did not lead to marriage.

While Moreau may not have the reputation of the likes of Brigitte Bardot or Francoise Hardy which sees them referenced constantly as French style icons, a study of her fashion attitude over the years reveals an inherent sense of chic which endured until the end of her life. She brilliantly created some of the most arresting female characters of mid-century cinema, most famously in Louis Malle's The Lovers and Francois Truffaut's Jules and Jim, and to these I would add her bleach-blonde gambler in Jacques Demy's Bay of Angels. Such accolades regularly made their way to the exacting star, who also won several awards in her lifetime-including the César, the French equivalent of an Oscar, for her performance in 1991's The Old Lady Who Walked in the Sea. To wit: She once said that "physical beauty is a disgrace"; she's spoken out against organized religion; and she scoffed at being labeled a "grande dame", insisting it's simply a backhanded compliment given to women of a certain age. "People who wanted to be nice about my looks would say, 'You remind me so much of Bette Davis.' Very nice, except I can't stand Bette Davis". The pair immediately followed that film with another project, The Lovers (1958), the film that made Moreau an worldwide star. She was a stalwart figure of French New Wave cinema and her supporters are understandably devastated. But Moreau took for herself a kind of stealth empowerment, earning - from her audience and from filmmakers alike - admiration, respect and love in such immeasurable, blended quantities that you can't really distinguish one from another.

Orson Welles once called her "the greatest actress in the world".

In a statement, the Army said the exercise involved Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and South Korea's Hyunmoo Missile II. The US claims North Korea poses a threat against its mainland as well as its two Asia-Pacific allies South Korea and Japan .

Throughout her illustrious career, Jeanne was mostly in France where she displayed a liking for literate and challenging movies often drawn from the works of prolific writers like Marguerite Duras and Jean Genet.

She was also honoured with a Palm d'Or in 2003 and received a Cesar Award in 2008. It is for this feature film which she sang The vortex, a composition that became as famous as the film it accompanies. After a lull in the 1970s and 1980s, her career picked up again.

But here she was, "Madame Friedkin", as someone rather derisively referred to her, occupying a sprawling home just above UCLA in Bel-Air and, as I learned over numerous lunches at a small, entirely untrendy Japanese place (no longer there) on Sawtelle that was a favorite of hers, writing her autobiography. A few years after The whirlwind, she was also out I have the memory fails, a title still today known to all.
