Reince Priebus: Trump 'wanted to go a different direction'

Anthony Scaramucci denied he was accusing chief of staff Reince Priebus of being one of the White House leakers

President Donald Trump replaced his chief of staff on Friday, announcing on Twitter that he had appointed Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to the job.

A Marine, Kelly served in the military for almost five decades and served in positions including chief of Southern Command, senior assistant to the secretary of defense and legislative liaison to Congress, and he served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yet Priebus was overruled, and Scaramucci was not only hired, but allowed to report directly to Trump - not the White House chief of staff. He is a Great American ... and a Great Leader.

As Homeland Security secretary, Kelly has taken the lead on some of Trump's most controversial policies, including his executive orders suspending the admission of refugees and temporarily barring visitors from several Muslim-majority nations.

He said that he did not disclose the change to his staff, presiding over his regular morning meeting of senior staff and accompanying Trump to NY for a speech about efforts to stop the MS-13 street gang.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff", Trump tweeted. He is a Great American.... At a meeting of auto company CEOs in MI in March, Trump praised the executives and then said, "And then I look at Reince", drawing scattered laughs with a tone that suggested Priebus was a less impressive presence. "I support him in that", he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room".

Sanders told reporters that Trump began the process of appointing a new chief of staff some two weeks back.

Trump could seek 'tougher' Russian Federation sanctions; Putin threatens retaliation
Senators overwhelmingly approved the bill Thursday with a vote of 98-2, a day after the House and Senate agreed on the terms. Russia's foreign ministry said the cuts to staff would bring it to the same level as Russian embassy staff in Washington.

Amid a stream of vulgar language, the former Wall Street financier named to the communications post last Friday called Priebus a "f***ing paranoid schizophrenic" and accused Bannon of trying to build his own brand "off the f***ing strength of the president". That brought Trump and Priebus close, but it was never a natural fit - the mild-mannered, careful former Wisconsin Republican Party leader with the Midwestern accent, once critically described as the "nebbish's nebbish", and the flashy, cavalier NY billionaire.

Priebus did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

But Priebus' power - which has been limited compared with past people with that title - has dwindled.

In a statement, Priebus said it had been one of the great honors of his life to serve Trump and the country.

The pair's absence pushes Trump's White House further away from the Republican establishment. Scaramucci is the latest top aide to be granted a direct line to Trump, and it has become increasingly unclear who actually reports to Priebus.

Ari Fleischer, who served as press secretary under George W. Bush, said there are multiple ways to effectively run the White House.

The announcement of Mr Priebus's departure came after three Republican senators defied White House pressure to vote against health care reforms.

Priebus' tenure lasted just seven months, an unusually short stint for a president's first chief of staff. Both Walsh and Spicer worked with Priebus at the RNC.
